J.Dreyfuss. Charging pouch

2017 Prototyping Rework Mass production Certifications & Go to Market

Context

After having imagined a portable battery covered up with leather, Jerôme Dreyfuss wishes to continue his quest for functional fashion through a refined and innovative everyday accessory, relating to the women he honours.
Together, we have created a leather pouch that embeds a wireless charging solution for smartphones while keeping the style of the house.

Step 1 – Prototyping

To do so, we thought about embedding a wireless charging system. We made a first module that brought together the different selected functions: the ability to charge a smartphone wirelessly in both directions (outside and inside the pouch), a 3000mAh battery capacity, an On / Off function using a piezoelectric touch plate and a micro-usb port to charge the pouch.

Step 2 – Rework

The challenge was to to make the electronic invisible. This means that the whole system we developed had to be tailored on the original design of the pouch, which was already defined. We used our Fashion Tech integrator ‘know-how’ in order to let every component blend into the pouch in the most efficient and discreet way. The whole system was covered with goatskin so the final product wouldn’t look like technological.

Step 3 – Mass Production

Once the co-designed solution was validated, we launched mold creation in order to start mass production. The whole serie was edited in 3 different colors & 2 different materials: brick, gold and black in goatskin leather or suede.

Step 4 – Certifications & Go to Market

Any product including electronics is subject to certifications. The certifications to be compliant with depend on the selected selling countries : CE for European Union, FCC for the USA, KC for Korea, PSE in Japan or MSDS, UN38.3 and Air/Sea transport identification for global transportation. We challenged the different certification organizations to obtain the most competitive prices and managed the process such that our client could sell it worldwide in its different stores.

“Finding a practical model seems much more important to me than being trendy, especially as men who want to be fashionable at all costs are often old-fashioned. Just like my bag, I try to be easy to live with, not bulky and as cool as possible.”
