2016 Design Prototyping Mass production Certifications & Go to Market

Context

This alliance is the result of the equality respect for tradition and the quest for novelty, closely linked to the smartphone. Indeed, we have developed a range of zippered wallets able to recharge any smartphone, enhanced by the grained leather characteristic of the Lancel House. This project aims to respect the House’s traditions and style while linking them to the contemporary lifestyle of its nomadic and connected clientele. Our teams ensured the conceptualization, design, production, logistics as well as the training of the Lancel sales consultants.

Step 1 – Design

Once the concept was created and the technical elements were validated, our design team drawn each line of the wallet, in order to shape it faithfully regarding to the Lancel spirit.

Step 2 – Prototyping

The challenge was to incorporate technology while respecting the French know-how according to the tradition of leather goods. The whole technical aspect of this project resided in the integration of this technological module while keeping a discreet and aesthetic rendering.
To achieve this, we applied a leather cladding on the casing that hosts the battery and added perforations that reveal light visual cues (these marks help to know the remaining percentage of battery). Then, we drew a flat edge on which we applied a slice dye so we could sew the module to the wallet, as if it were any other simple leather piece.

The module is hiding a lithium-ion battery with a 2200mAh capacity, able to charge every types of smartphones by using a set of different wired adapters. We have chosen a one and only USB-C port which allows IN and OUT energy transfer. This way, one port is enough to recharge the wallet and the smartphones, while keeping a minimalist design.

Step 3 – Mass Production

Once the co-designed solution was validated, we launched mold creation in order to start mass production. The whole serie was edited in 4 different colors: blue, red, black & camel.

Step 4 – Certifications & Go to Market

Any product including electronics is subject to certifications. The certifications to be compliant with depend on the selected selling countries : CE for European Union, FCC for the USA, KC for Korea, PSE in Japan or MSDS, UN38.3 and Air/Sea transport identification for global transportation. We challenged the different certification organizations to obtain the most competitive prices and managed the process such that our client could sell it worldwide in its different stores.
